Collaborating for a Crematorium in Malta

The Hindu Association of Malta is delighted to share updates on a significant development for our community. The Executive Committee members recently met with Mr. Johann Camilleri, Managing Director of Camilleri Funeral Directors International, and High Commissioner of India – Mrs. Gloria Gangte, to discuss the construction of a crematorium facility in Malta. This meeting marked an important milestone in addressing a long-standing need of the Hindu community.

A Productive Dialogue with Key Stakeholders

The meeting was both productive and insightful, as Mr. Camilleri shared his thoughtful approach to developing a crematorium facility that meets the needs of Malta’s diverse communities. His ongoing consultations with various faiths and communities, including Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, and others, aim to ensure that the proposed facility respects and accommodates their unique cultural and religious requirements.

During the discussion, the Hindu Association of Malta provided a detailed explanation of the Hindu funeral process, helping to clarify the specific needs and practices of our community. Mr. Camilleri expressed his commitment to creating an inclusive and respectful plan that addresses these considerations.

Next Steps: From Planning to Reality

Mr. Camilleri’s proposed plan is currently under review and will undergo further refinement in consultation with other faith communities. Once finalized, the plan will be submitted to the Ministry for approval. This process is expected to take two to six months, following which the construction of the crematorium is projected to take approximately one and a half years to complete.

The Hindu Association of Malta assured Mr. Camilleri of our full cooperation and community support in bringing this essential facility to fruition. Such collaborative efforts are crucial to ensuring the success of this project.

Acknowledging Support and Looking Ahead

We are deeply grateful to the Government of Malta, the High Commission of India in Malta, and Mr. Johann Camilleri for their continuous support and understanding of our community’s needs. Their efforts have been instrumental in moving this project forward.

The Hindu Association of Malta has been actively following up with the concerned authorities and remains optimistic about achieving this milestone. With our collective efforts and the cooperation of various stakeholders, we hope the long-awaited crematorium facility will soon become a reality, fulfilling an essential need for the Hindu community and beyond.
